Hotels in Kyoto, Japan are sure to satisfy the most discerning visitor. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for five star luxury or a quaintly decorated three star hotel. Kyoto always over delivers with authenticity and hospitality.

It’s not necessary to stay near the JR Kyoto Station, but it is convenient to be near a subway station. Overall, hotels in Kyoto, Japan are very walkable and have lots of shopping and dining options. I highly recommend booking your hotel in Kyoto as far in advance as possible because they do sell out.

Central Area

1. The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto

The Ritz-Carlton is located on the banks of the historic Kamo River. It’s the ultimate in sophistication combining the traditional with the modern. Close to Gion and Pontocho, the location is perfect for sightseeing, shopping and dining.

The hotel has 134 guest rooms that incorporate traditional Japanese design and craftsmanship. The suites have a Japanese garden and a moon-viewing platform, a spa and a dining area for added luxury during your stay in Kyoto.

2. Mitsui Garden Hotel Sanjo

The Mitsui Garden Hotel Sanjo is a quiet hotel surrounded by a Japanese garden. All rooms are equipped with Wi-Fi and pocket coil US Serta mattresses.

The hotel is a 1-minute walk to the Karasuma Oike Subway Station and a 7-minute walk to Karasuma Station on the Hankyu Line. The location is very convenient for sightseeing, shopping, and dining.

3. Tomoya Residence Hotel Nijo Takakura

Tomoya Residence Hotel Nijo Takakura is close to the Kyoto Imperial Palace and claims to be the perfect location to fully enjoy Kyoto. There are many established stores and townhouses, and unique shops that make this area great for exploring and shopping.

The guest rooms are large, falling somewhere between 45 to 80 square meters. Each room has a separate living room, bedroom, and compact kitchen. This hotel focuses on medium to long-term stays for groups and families with children.

4. Tokyu Stay Kyoto Sanjo Karasuma

The Tokyu Stay Kyoto Sanjo Karasuma is a 10-minute walk from the Nishiki Market and a 15-minute walk to Nijo Castle. This hotel is in a great location for sightseeing with access to two train/subway lines and buses.

The rooms are spacious with a full range of complimentary facilities. Each room has its own washing and drying machine, refrigerator, microwave and Wi-Fi. Some rooms also have a small kitchenette.

5. Mimaru Kyoto Shinmachi Sanjo

The Mimaru Kyoto Shinmachi Sanjo has themed rooms and is a great choice for longer stays, large groups and families. All of the rooms are equipped with kitchenettes, cooking utensils, and dining tables.

This is right in between Nijo Castle and Nishiki Martket. Both are only a 15-minute walk from the hotel. The area is surrounded by small family owned restaurants and cafés.

6. The OneFive Hotel Shijo

The OneFive Kyoto Shijo is an excellent option for enjoying shopping, dining, and sightseeing around Kyoto. Every room is well equipped with a safe, free Wi-Fi, a refrigerator, and an air purifier.

The hotel is only a 3-minute walk from Omiya Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line, and 10-minutes away from the Shijo subway station. Nijo Castle is an easy 13-minute walk away.

7. Urban Hotel Kyoto Shijo Premium

The Urban Hotel Kyoto Shijo Premium is conveniently located in the center of Kyoto city. It’s a 10-minute walk to the Shijo Subway Station and a 3-minute walk to the Hankyu Kyoto Line’s Omiya station.

All of the rooms are equipped with Simmons beds, free Wi-Fi, an air purifier, and a refrigerator. There is also an onsite Sento bath, a sauna, and a gym.

Higashiyama Area

8. Park Hyatt Kyoto

The Park Hyatt Kyoto combines the traditions of Kyoto with five star elegance. The hotel defines itself as a luxury guest house.

It overlooks the small, busy streets of Higashiyama making it a great location for sightseeing, and it is within walking distance of Kiyomizu Temple, Kodaiji Temple, and Gion.

9. The Hotel Higashiyama

The design of The Hotel Higashiyama was inspired by the Shirakawa River, and combines the essence of Japanese and Western styles to create a calm space. Staying here will give you easy access to both the Keihan train line (4-minute walk) and the Kyoto subway line (12-minute walk).

The hotel opened its doors in July of 2022. They proudly use Sealy mattresses in all their rooms, with the suites getting the Crown Jewel Series mattresses. All rooms come with free Wi-Fi, a refrigerator, an air purifier, and a safe.

All of the rooms have a simple and beautiful Japanese design. The rooms are big and the suites, and some of the premier rooms, have very nice patios. To top it off, it’s only a 2-minute walk to JR Kyoto Station.

11. Sakura Terrace The Gallery

Although the Sakura Terrace The Gallery has an unusual name, it is quite a nice hotel concept. There are two buildings and each has rooms with their own unique styles.

The rooms are large and well decorated. They come equipped with Simmons beds, an air purifier, and a refrigerator. The hotel also offers a Sento bath, a complimentary coffee and tea lounge, a complimentary gym, 24-hour coin laundry, and one free drink, including alcohol, per person per night.

12. 22 Pieces

22 Pieces gets its name because the hotel only has 22 rooms available for rent. This hotel is geared toward families and groups that are looking for a longer stay.

Each room has multiple beds, a couch, a kitchenette, and free Wi-Fi. They also have pretty nice bikes available for rent. Some rooms come with a terrace that is great for relaxing and having a pre-dinner drink. The hotel is a short 5-minute walk from the JR Kyoto Station.
