Cellular Service & Wi-Fi

Home > Travel Tips > Cellular Service & Wi-Fi

As you might expect, Japan has excellent cellular phone service and internet connectivity for residents. For tourists to Japan, it is a complicated situation. If being connected is necessary while you are in Japan, it is best to do research and make preparations before you go.

Best Options for Cellular Service

As of writing, cellular service for voice calling is only available to residents of Japan. You cannot buy SIM cards for voice calls. However, there are some options available.

1. International Roaming

Contact your cellular service provider before you go to Japan and ask about international roaming packages. In the United States, T-Mobile Magenta Max plan offers complimentary 5G data roaming and unlimited texting while in Japan.

2. Phone Rental

When you arrive in Japan, there are counters at the Tokyo and Osaka airports where you can rent a cell phone. It is possible to rent a phone on arrival, but you may want to make a reservation to guarantee you get a phone.

3. Pay Phones

There are still pay phones all over Japan, usually in or near train stations. Pay phones are usually green or grey. You can purchase telephone cards at convenience stores or you can use coins.

4. Internet Phone

If you have an internet connection, you can use Line or Skype to make phone calls directly to someone using the same application. This is a convenient option if you just need a phone to talk to friends and family while in Japan.

Options for Wi-Fi

If you are not concerned with making voice calls, there are many more options available for cellular Wi-Fi service.

1. SIM Cards

There are vending machines in the Arrivals hall at the Tokyo airport for prepaid SIM cards (i.e., NTT). Japan SIM cards can only be used in unlocked phones.

2. Pocket Wi-Fi Rental

Pocket Wi-Fi allows multiple devices to connect to the internet at the same time. Rentals are available at the airport or online.

3. Free Hotspots

Free Wi-Fi is available at airports, major train stations, restaurants, and shopping plazas. There is usually a registration process to use the Wi-Fi.

4. Hotels

Many hotels offer free internet in the lobby or in the guest rooms. Older hotels may not have Wi-Fi, but a wired LAN line service. Higher-end hotels may not offer a free service. It is best to check internet availability before booking a hotel if this is important to you.
