Yokohama, Japan has lots to see and do. Located just outside Tokyo, it may feel like an extension of the capital, but it’s definitely worth a stop.
The Shinkansen bullet train stops at Shin-Yokohama Station and the local JR station is Yokohama Station.
7 Things to Do in Yokohama, Japan
1. Sankeien Garden
Sankeien Garden is a strolling garden built by a silk merchant in 1906. It contains 17 historic buildings that were moved from across Japan to the garden, including tea houses and a three-storied pagoda from Kyoto. There is a central pond, small rivers, and flowers.
2. Chinatown
Chinatown in Yokohama is one of the biggest in the world. There are over 300 restaurants serving ramen noodles, steamed buns, and other Chinese dishes.
See old architecture, walk through colorful gates, and experience the festivities during Chinese New Year.
3. Motomachi
Motomachi is an international shopping street with high-end shops and restaurants. On weekends, the street closes to cars and is pedestrian only.
4. Minato Mirai 21
Minato Mirai 21 is a large urban district that forms the skyline of Yokohama from Yokohama Bay. There are historical buildings, shops and restaurants, entertainment and museums.
The Landmark Tower offers excellent views of the city from the 69th floor observatory. At 296 meters, it was once the tallest building in Japan
Cosmo World is an amusement park with roller coasters and a large Ferris wheel.
The Red Brick Warehouse is an old customs house from the late 1800s. The historical building now has a variety of shopping.
5. Cupnoodles Museum
The Cupnoodles Museum has everything you ever wanted to know about the history of instant noodles. From the first instant noodle created in 1958 to the invention of noodles that you can eat in space in 2005.
At the museum, you can design your own original cup and add your favorite ingredients to create your own cup noodle.
Near Shin-Yokohama Station, there is also a Ramen Museum.
6. Osanbashi Pier
Osanbashi Pier is a 400 meter walkway originally built in 1894. The 2002 redesign looks like ocean waves and offers great views of the city.
International cruise ships dock at the pier, but the public is welcome to go for a stroll.
7. Kirin Brewery
Kirin Beer started in Yokohama in 1907. You can tour the facility and learn about the history of Kirin. See fermentation tanks and the canning and bottling areas. At the end, you can taste a couple of the beers for free.
